Case Temporary Court: 'In fact, every building should be constructed in a way that makes it remountable'

Leon van Woerkom

The dismantling of the Temporary Court Amsterdam is in full swing. Images of the disassembly can be seen in this video, in which also protagonists Louise Attema (Rijksgebouwendienst), Irma Thijssen (RVO), Arend van de Beek (Lagemaat BV) and Menno Rubbens (cepezedprojects) discuss the unique character of this circular building.

exceptionally circular
"We got what we wanted. And actually even more. We got a qualitatively good building at an acceptable price. Circularity in a way that was very special then and is still special nowadays," according to Louise Attema, who was project leader on behalf of the Rijksgebouwendienst.

about the design
The Temporary Court Amsterdam is a building that will be demolished five years after its completion, as required. The building served as a temporary home for the administration of justice in Amsterdam, during the construction of a new, larger facility and the renovation of the old building. Its temporary nature was not reflected in the design, the appearance or the experience of the building.
"We wanted to avoid wasting a lot of material and money. So from the point of view of waste, the solution actually came to be circular," says Attema. "It was a surprise to us that this solution that came out went so far. And it actually goes much further than we were able to do together five years ago.

the future
"This building is unique because it was designed to be taken apart," says Arend van de Beek of Lagemaat BV, who is carefully dismantling the building and sees a future in this way of working. "In 30 to 40 years we will have to be working like this every day in the demolition business."
Lagemaat will also rebuild the building in Enschede, where Du Prie bouw & ontwikkeling did the construction on the site in Amsterdam. According to Menno Rubbens of cepezedprojects, that is the best scenario. "It is a building that can be reassembled by several parties. That way, you also guarantee that it can be reassembled in the future."
"Actually, every building should be built remountable and not for demolition," states Irma Thijssen of Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO).
