Last Tuesday, the first of two new bicycle parkings at the Tilburg train station was opened! It concerns the northern parking, with a length of over 160 meters and room for 3.900 bicycles. Carefully aligned with its surroundings, the parking was realized between the LocHal and the train tracks to the east side of the station.

bicycle hotel

Because of the high-quality materials, luxurious appearance and refined detailing and finishing, the parking facilities had already gained the nickname ‘bicycle hotel’. The façade stands on a plinth of concrete and consists of both transparent and translucent glass panels attached to anthracite-colored steel profiles with integrated drainpipes. The panels were mounted in a ventilated weatherboard structure and the roof is equipped with biodiverse sedum; both keep the parking cool during the summer. The green roof also functions as a water buffer during heavy rainfall. By late 2023, the Tilburg train station will also be fitted with an additional platform, which cepezed is designing as well at the moment. Once this is realized, there will be a direct connection between the platform and the storey of the parking facility.

modern innovations

The inviting parking facility is staffed during the periods that trains are running. Moreover, for a safe environment, it lights up at night. Parking is free for the first 24 hours and electronic signs indicate where spots are available. The storey is accessible through a conveyor belt. At the actual parking location, users can scan a QR code with which they can easily refind their bike on return. Next to the entrance, the facility is equipped with a service room for minor repairs. Also, some 200 OV (public transport) bikes are for rent.

bicycle parking south

Dura Vermeer commenced construction of the parking a year ago. In august, the firm will also start with the execution of the southern parking facility at the city side of the train station. This is expected to be completed by late 2021 and will offer space for 3.400 bicycles. Thus together, the bicycle parkings can accommodate 7.300 bicycles, rendering the parking capacity of train station Tilburg one of the largest in The Netherlands!
