The old situation

The railway station area in Tilburg was characterized by a number of important and related weaknesses. It was hard for people to get their bearings and there was limited space for pedestrians. Due to the traffic organization and the parking spaces for cars, taxis and bicycles, there was a difficult spatial relationship between the city and the station.

In addition, the bus station situated to the west was too small and there were unsafe situations there due to poorly organized routes for pedestrians and motor traffic.

Plan for the new situation

In the context of a closed competition, cepezed designed a renewal plan. The jury was particularly impressed by the balanced combination of spatial, architectural, logistical and commercial qualities. In addition, the jury greatly appreciated cepezed’s perspective on the process and the collaboration with, among others, the municipality, ProRail and Dutch Railways (NS). Furthermore, the design fitted in well with the boulevard concept the municipality wished to introduce.

Prefab tunnel

To process the growing number of travellers, a completely new prefab tunnel weighing 6.6 million kilo was squeezed under the railway tracks and platforms. It contains the staircases to the trains, but also small shops and kiosks, and additionally functions as an interdistrict connection between the city and the former NS site on the north side.

Modern return to the original design

Jarring additions to the station over a period of more than 50 years were removed. The strength and clarity of the original design by Koen van der Gaast (1923-1993) were completely restored. The spectacular roof construction was retained entirely intact.

Space for bike and bus

Motor traffic and the parking spaces outside were reduced. For on both sides of the train tracks, large cycle parks were created, which fit in seamlessly with the new, more spacious urban design setting.

A new, zero-on-the-meter bus station was also created. Passengers can wait for their bus here under cover and in green surroundings. The many trees and plants also considerably increase the incentive to linger in the other public space around the station.
