platform design at stations

The overall platforms layout at a variety of train stations were outdated, so ProRail issued a tender. Public-space design office Blom & Moors was awarded the assignment. For them, cepezed developed a waiting room, kiosk and glass windbreak, which also doubles as a leaning element.

Transparent waiting room and kiosk

cepezed made the various designs with an optimum of transparency. As a result, the three-metre-high waiting room and kiosk have glass walls. These been assembled fully flush. The constituent panels have been glued. On the underside, they are attached to a recessed plinth of stainless steel.

The roof package

The roof package of the waiting room and kiosk consists of a prefabricated timber-frame construction that also lends stability. Its minimal height incorporates acoustic facilities and cabling for the lighting.

Kiosk versus Waiting room

The kiosk on the platform is also a working space, so the walls are double-glazed. Its roof package is also thicker than on the waiting room. One façade section is closed because a kiosk needs more service facilities than a waiting room.

Windbreak gives the platform colour

The windbreak consists of a stainless-steel frame with LED element and standing-sitting support in one. A double-glazed panel is clamped in between. A barely visible dot pattern is screen printed onto the glass panels.
Because the panels can be illuminated in different colours, each platform has its own appearance.

A suitable element for each station

The various facilities on the platforms have a modular set-up: this allows for rapid construction and variation in size. It means that a suitable element can be composed for each station.

The renewed station fixtures were implemented in various combinations. At Leiden Central Station, this included the installation of a waiting room and kiosk. At Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena station, the installed fixtures include the dual-function glass wind break and leaning element.
