The first self-sufficient bus station in The Netherlands is nominated for the Roof of the Year 2019 awards! The sustainable bus terminal in Tilburg is designed by cepezed and built by BAM Infra. The bus station is situated right next to the train station. cepezed also designed the revamp hereof and currently provides it with two large bicycle parking facilities and a fourth platform.

special roof

The basic setup consists of a series of very thin columns with an evenly minimalistic awning structure of steel and stretched ETFE-foil on top of them. The construction forms an elongated triangular circuit with the bus positions arranged around the outer side. The heart of the circuit is open and contains green zones with plants and trees. The spacious awning all around fully covers the bus platforms and additionally part of the buses. Thus, travelers can always board and deboard sheltered and protected from rain. During the day, the awning filters the sunlight, while during the dark hours, it becomes one large and spacious lighting element that strongly contributes to the travelers’ feeling of safety. 250m² of solar panels lie atop of the special canopy roof that make the bus station self-sufficient in its energy needs.

global interest

The unusual and modern design is widely published and generates enthusiastic reactions. Last summer, the roof trade magazine Roofs described the bus station as hip and sustainable. “Bus stations don’t have to be second rate, as this one in Tilburg demonstrates,” headlined the American sustainable platform Treehugger. “Super beautiful, really cool,” said traveler Kenneth Snijder in the Brabants Dagblad. The Portuguese website motor24.pt labeled the station as “Most ecological bus stop in the world” and the magazine for Digital Signage, DOOH & Smart City invides referred to the station as “The bus stop of the future”.

Both the shortlist and the winner of the Roof-awards will be announced on March 20th 2020 during a festive evening in Hotel Zuiderduin in Egmond aan Zee.
