Cepezed in the race for designing the new City Theatre Arnhem

Bart van Hoek

Five team of architects and engineers, including cepezed, have been selected to come up with their ideas for the new City Theatre in Arnhem. They will be given until December to do so. The municipality of Arnhem announced this today.

selection phase
A total of 19 design teams applied for the selection phase. The assessment committee, in which the municipality of Arnhem and the City Theatre are represented, looked at experience with similar projects, the combination of renovation and new construction, experience with sustainability and circularity.
Each team has the four requested design and advisory disciplines: architecture, installation advice, construction advice and advice on building physics, acoustics and fire safety. The five teams will now work on their vision, plan of action and quotation. The municipality provides frameworks for this. For instance, part of the current building will have to be demolished, monumental walls and sections will remain standing and there will be an expansion in square meters. The assessment committee will then review these plans. In January 2023, it will announce which team will be allowed to further develop the plans into a design.

opening 2027
The city council approved the renewal of the City Theatre, which is in need of renovation. The college has submitted a credit proposal to the council, which the council will soon consider. The City Theatre will close in autumn 2023, first to allow asbestos research and possible remediation and then for construction work. The doors of the renovated theatre will reopen to the public in 2027. For the intervening time, the City Theatre is looking for alternatives to continue organizing performances.

extraordinary project
Cathelijne Bouwkamp, alderman for culture: 'I am delighted that we can take the next step towards the new City Theatre, which is really in need of renewal. There was wide interest among design teams, which shows how special this project is. We wanted to invite a maximum of five teams and we succeeded. I look forward to seeing their plans.'
