Schiphol airport is reinforcing its infrastructure. The first major project is the new pier. cepezed and cepezedinterieur have been contracted for the total engineering team that has been formed by international engineering firm AECOM.

A complex project  

The pier is complex in many respects, partly because it functions as a mini-terminal, including border controls and security checks. One essential factor is the logistics, with more than 20 types of passenger flows for arrivals, departures and transfers within three control and security regimes (Schengen, Non-Schengen and Non-Schengen unscreened).

Unique solution for Amsterdam Airport  

Aircraft of different sizes and capacities use the same gatehouses at the new pier at Amsterdam Airport. In addition, these are directly linked to the various control and security regimes. This solution is unique to Schiphol and rare in international aviation.

Airport stakeholders  

Another factor that makes this project complex is the large number of stakeholders. Such as Schiphol's own operations, consumers and asset management departments. And parties such as the airlines, military police, customs and government agencies.

The design had to be created in just one year. The design already anticipates two subsequent phases.

Passenger comfort  

The passengers are not aware of all this complexity. For optimum comfort, cepezed has focused on a high level of processing efficiency and quality of experience. The three-storey pier is an attractive place to linger with many amenities, such as shops and restaurants.

There are also many seating and waiting areas. These areas do not belong to a specific gate; travellers choose where they prefer to sit.

Art, design and vibrant green  

The new pier is open and transparent. Among other features, there are large-scale voids that provide a strong connection between the floors. The voids contain living greenery that grows to the top floor of the building. In the interior, passengers can enjoy art and Dutch design classics.

International sustainability label  

The pier has been designed to align with the international sustainability label LEED Gold. The sustainability aspects include the modular construction and material applications. For instance, the floor finishes are bamboo or lightweight composite on the basis of marble debris, while the ceilings are made of recycled plastic. The façades are highly insulating and climate-adaptive. The roofs of the pier and gatehouses support solar panels.

The design for the new pier was finished at the end of 2017. Construction started in 2018 and is in full swing.
