construction update new pier schiphol

The construction of the new pier at Schiphol Airport is steadily progressing and the contours of the building are getting clearly visible. Most of the ground floor hollow core slabs have been placed into position. The first elements of the steel structure have been mounted, partly up to the level of the gatehouses, which will accommodate both narrow-body and wide-body aircrafts. The steel decks of the composite floor slabs have also partly been placed; these will shortly be topped with concrete.

The pier will largely have a height of four layers plus an unobtrusive layer of technical rooms. The construction is organized in different phases. The pier consists of six segments, of which segment one at the end and four in the middle are now being built. When the assembly of the consecutive segments commences, construction of the gatehouses on the completed segments will start simultaneously. The temporary corridor between the new and the existing B pier will be realized in the final stage of construction.

The pier is fully designed as a kit of parts consisting of prefabricated elements. The various steel elements are fabricated by BYSteel in Braga, Portugal, and are transported by roll-on-roll-off ship.
