MECC Maastricht receives BREEAM-certificate for sustainable convention centre

Maastricht Exhibition & Congress Centre, also known as MECC, has been awarded the BREEAM-NL In Use certificate with the score ‘very good’. cepezed renovated the congress center. Due to corona measures, an official opening was postponed several times, and eventually they decided to cancel it. This certificate is a fine recognition of MECC's sustainable ambitions, according to responsible architectural firm cepezed.

“By receiving the BREEAM-NL In Use certificate, MECC Maastricht highlights its sustainability policy”, MECC Maastricht proudly states in a press release. “The thorough upgrade and expansion of MECC Maastricht's congress centre aims to serve organisers of multi-day (inter)national congresses and events even better. This will lead to more international congresses and events and a greater spin-off for the city.”

The renovated MECC was completed in mid-2021, after two years of renovation. The interior architect (cepezedinterieur), structural engineer (IMd Raadgevende Ingenieurs), installation consultant (Nelissen ingenieursbureau), building physics consultant (DGMR) and lighting consultant (Frans van Hooijdonk) were part of the design team from the very beginning. The design was longlisted for the Arc Awards last year and was realised by contractor Mertens and installer Spie. The achieved 3 stars (very good) apply to the Forumpassage, the Congress Centre, the Expo Foyer and the Brightlands Meeting Point, also known as Bar Bistro SAAM.
