The Temporary Courthouse Amsterdam is again acclaimed as a paragon of circular economy. During the Steel Construction Day on October 3rd, the building designed by cepezed and cepezedinterior won the National Sustainability Prize Steel 2018. Delegated client Menno Rubbens of consortium dpcp (consisting of Du Prie Bouw & Ontwikkeling and cepezedprojects) proudly received the prize.

“With the Temporary Courthouse Amsterdam, action was well on all fronts,” according to the jury report, which continues: “the cooperating client, the intimately cooperating parties, the smart implementation and the full deployment of the circular concept and securing it in a business proposition. It shows courage to set up a special consortium that takes on the financing, construction, disassembly and remounting entirely at its own risk. The circular building design, with a completely demountable main support construction with hollow-core slab floors and facades, has been implemented in detail, up to and including markings of the construction parts for the rebuilding. The demountable and dry connection of the concrete floor-steel construction is brilliant in its simplicity and the material passport, which is so in demand, is finally a fact. From A to Z, every material is designed for future reuse. In addition, it has also become an architectural building. This paragon of ‘circular economy’ within the construction sector does justice to IFD, makes it up to date again, but above all stimulates the whole construction chain to follow, and is therefore unanimously the winner of The National Sustainability Prize for Steel 2018.”

At the end of September, Saskia Oranje of the Amsterdam architect agency DOOR also included the courthouse in her top 10 circular projects, published in the magazine Stedebouw & Architectuur.
