Forschungsgebäude öaw

In the Forschungsgebäude (research building) in the Austrian city of Graz, various scientific research groups have been brought together. The design by cepezed had to encourage interaction between the users. The building also had to be flexible in its layout, because of a possible future value as a normal office.

The greatest challenge

How do you make sure that a building, which is to contain an endless series of uniform offices and laboratories, is still stimulating and spatially interesting? We opted for a ground plan in which four elongated strips form two unequal, compound crosses. Three of the arms of the crosses are linked together at or near their ends, so that together they enclose a triangular atrium.

The building seems to stretch out inquisitively in all directions. Both the corridors and the laboratories look out on the outside world.

Stairs at heart

The atrium is covered with glass, houses the main staircase and the galleries and functions as the vibrant centre of the building.
