Innovationszentrum Berlin-Adlershof

For the German WISTA Management, cepezed designed an innovation centre in Berlin-Adlershof, a district in the southeast of German capital. The glass building is a shared building for start-ups and young companies in the IT sector.

Spatially surprising

The project in the German capital turned out to be a challenge: the plot was unfavourably shaped and the maximum permissible construction height was six storeys. In order to nonetheless achieve pleasant accommodation, cepezed came up with a surprising solution.

We decided to use only part of the plot and build two storeys higher than actually allowed. The first four floors were opened up by implementing them largely in glass.

Perfect alignment

The result was a transparent construction with exactly the same height as the building opposite. In spite of the two ‘extra’ levels, the design fitted in remarkably well with the rather closed surrounding buildings.

A five-metre wide atrium with a transparent roof divides the building lengthwise and provides a generous amount of daylight. The ‘floating islands’ in the central hall function as a social meeting place. Because the offices can be arranged entirely freely, they are attractive for a many IT companies.
