Noordwijk is known for the European Space Research & Technology Centre (ESTEC), the largest location of the European Space Agency. Directly adjacent to the ESTEC, the Space Business Park has been developed. cepezed designed the European Space Innovation Centre (ESIC), a multi-company building on this site.

Synergy in the building

Sustainability, flexibility, an industrial image and an above-average price-quality ratio were important parameters for the design.

The floor slabs of the building have a U-shaped arrangement and recede stepwise under a curved roof. In the heart of the building, there is a transparent roofed atrium that extends into an outdoor terrace. The atrium contains shared facilities such as informal meeting spots and a small restaurant.

Dynamics of ESIC

The main staircase, with steps of extruded aluminium is positioned invitingly in the middle. In this way, we hope to discourage the use of lifts.

The utilization of a great deal of glass in the façades and interior walls contributes to the overall spaciousness and transparency. It also creates plenty of interaction between the various companies.

Integration in the structure

The design, construction, climate control and building-performance aspects are radically integrated. The various consultants used a three-dimensional Building Information Model (BIM) for this purpose.

For example, the rainwater discharge is concealed behind the closed façade strips. And the steel construction of the atrium roof functions as the conductor for the sun shades. Also, an alternative fire-safety concept has been applied in which the entire building counts as one large fire compartment.

Ventilation and heating

For reasons of efficiency and sustainability, the building’s building services have been kept to a minimum. The core activation of the concrete in the composite floor slabs with profiled steel sheeting maintains a constant comfortable temperature in the building.

The ventilation is integrated into the steel construction by means of an overpressure system. This system transfers the air from the different units to the atrium. In the atrium, the air is exhausted while a heat pump recovers energy from it.
