luxury apartments in green surroundings
Park Hoog Oostduin is a large-scale luxury residential complex with over 200 dwellings in a former modernist Shell office originally designed by H.E. Oud, son of J.J.P. Oud. The 1968 complex is located on the edge of the green Oostduin-Arendsdorp estate in The Hague. Before the transformation, it consisted of a large-scale high-rise volume with a lower block directly at right angles. The lower block was demolished and replaced by a new one on the existing foundation. This one is less elongated than the previous and is placed at some distance from the high-rise. This has resulted in more space between the two volumes and a stronger connection with the neighboring park and forest area.

The city side of the high-rise also contains the entrance and was fitted with a special extension allowing for the creation of large dwellings and outdoor spaces without radically adjusting the existing stability structure. The extension consists of a huge, relatively lightweight ‘rack’ of steel which is three meters deep and has floors of composite slabs with profiled steel sheeting. On the sea side of the building, the former office corridor in the central section was incorporated in the dwellings, while outdoor loggias were created within the contours of the existing building. The apartments on both sides are accessed through the former office corridor on the city side, which has been preserved. The stability of the steel rack was designed by IMd Raadgevende Ingenieurs from Rotterdam, who made clever use of the existing foundation. The rack was executed by Bentstaal located in IJsselstein.
